City profile

Cairo is the capital city, and economic and cultural centre of the Arab Republic of Egypt. Located in the northeast of the country, Cairo Governorate covers an area of 3,085 square kilometres and has a population of about 22.8 million. While the city is most famous for being home to an ancient wonder of the world, the Giza Pyramids Complex, the city is also known as the manufacturing capital of Egypt. Cotton textiles, agricultural products, chemical, plastics and automobiles, among other goods, are produced within the city.

While it is still has some work to do on Investor Attractiveness, Cairo is considered a top city in the Middle East and North Africa region for affordable skilled talent and funding for early-stage ventures.

The city now has a host of incubators, accelerators and co-working spaces to enable deeper collaboration and innovation with a goal to position Egypt as a leading technology hub.

Cairo has made great strides to improve Urban Management and Governance, now with widespread access to basic necessities, high land efficiency and efforts to work towards more sustainable and circular waste management. Informal waste pickers have been a huge driver of success and it is estimated that these Zabbaleen are responsible for recycling 85% of the city's waste. Agencies have recognized the economic benefit of such informal sectors and are working to assist marginalized groups to help sustain their livelihoods, while encouraging social mobility and reducing child participation. To rise the ranks further in Urban Management and Governance, the city should prioritize other aspects of sustainability and climate resilience, particularly to tackle a high flood risk from high regional variability in precipitation.
