City Profile

Dubai is a high-income developing market economy and the most populous city in the United Arab Emirates, home to 3.3 million in its urban area. Trade is central to the city's economy as it is home to two of the world's largest ports and air cargo hub. Trade, logisitics and financial services are key industries for the city. Tourism is another key sectoral focus area and Dubai has positioned itself as a luxury tourist destination over the years.

Dubai scores extremely highly for Investor Attractiveness due to strong policies to assure a safe environment for doing business and the promise of attractive returns.

Dubai has also been able to leverage its strategic geographic location - an inherent asset of the UAE - to develop strong international connectivity between Asia, Africa, Europe and elsewhere in the Middle East. Investment in developing state-of-the-art infrastructure in recent decades has propelled the city forward into becoming a leading destination for business.

While Dubai has made great strides in introducing world-class architecture and beautiful urban environments, the city still has room to grow to become more liveable for all urban residents. Where the city struggles most is on mobility including access to public transport and walkability.

Keen to build on the metro’s initial success, Dubai RTA asked Arup to develop proposals to extend the walking catchments, with particular emphasis on low energy options.
