City profile

Hanoi is the capital of Vietnam and seen as the country's political, cultural, scientific and technological centre. It has a diverse manufacturing economy ranging across electronics, information technology, textiles, agricultural products, chemical, rubber, pharmaceuticals and more. Hanoi is known for its unique architecture and urban form influenced by Southeast Asian, Chinese and French culture. The city proper has a population of just over 4 million, extending to over 20 million when including the surrounding metropolitan area.

Hanoi benefits from a conducive business climate, a wealth of young and skilled professionals, relatively cheap land and labour, as well as a strong macroeconomic stability.

All of these factors have helped Hanoi raise its profile to attract investors. Improving the city's branding and enabling an environment for entrepreneurship are key items to focus on. The Hanoi People's Committee has already developed policy to improve time costs and business support to raise the city's profile among investors.

The city is at risk of falling behind its peers in the face of future opportunities due to low scores in AI readiness, and other digital infrastructure indicators. Additionally, the lack of climate resilience planning and barriers to unlocking renewable energy potential will inhibit progress as sustainability becomes top of mind for investors.
