Hyderabad is capital city of Telangana State in India, and considered a leading centre for the growing technology industry in the country. Historically, the city thrived as a centre for trade of rare diamonds, emeralds and pearls. Today, the city is home to an estimated population of over 11 million making it one of India's most populous cities. Major sectors include manufacturing (e.g. pharmaceuticals, electronics, automobiles), the knowledge sector and tourism.
Proactive investment promotion strategies that improve ease and cost of doing business have helped the city rise the ranks compared to its peer cities in India. The city is aspiring to become a hub for research and innovation and has made provisions for bespoke incentive packages for mega-projects which includes investment above US$30 million, or creation of over 1000 jobs.
While the city is thriving economically, there are significant challenges around its natural and infrastructural assets. In recent years, the city's groundwater table has dropped sharply, raising concerns over severe water crises to come. To address these challenges and enhance its competitiveness, Hyderabad will need to focus on improving infrastructure, water management, public transportation, urban planning, and environmental conservation through better governance.
