Capital of Cambodia, Phnom Penh, is the country's most populous city with 2.8 million inhabitants. The city was formerly well known as a processing centre with textiles, pharmaceuticals, machine manufacturing and rice milling at the centre of its economy. Today it is seen as the nation's economic and industrial hub.
This is owing to the nation's Air Quality Improvement Program, Clean Air Plan, and capacity building programmes. The city also performs relatively well in terms of work intensity, safety and cost of living.
While the city has a substantial young workforce, and relatively low cost of labour and land, it still struggles to attract investment. New national reforms are targeted at addressing this e.g. the new Law on Investment, PPP Law and incentives for priority sectors. Investment in transportation infrastructure ranging from national assets like ports, to local systems like bus networks, will be critical areas of growth.
